This book presents community perspectives on company-led grievence mechanisms, using case studies from the oil, gas, mining, and forestry sectors. The authors provide a review of literature exporing the definitions, history, drivers, and preticted trends of greivance mechanisms, drawing on desk-based research and interviews with companies and industry experts. The following chapters then present a series of case studies from BP in Azerbaijan, Congolaise Industrielle des Bois in the northern Republic of Congo, the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project in the Russian Far East, Anglo American, TVIRD in the Philippines, and Kaltim Prima Coal in Indonesia. The book concludes that successful grievance mechanisms must sit within an overall approach to stakeholder engagement that is open and responsive, providing examples of effective approaches and system innovations.
