概要
This artcicle investigates price premiums for MSC labelled whitefish in the German retail market. The researchers use scanner data to investingate the price premium associated with MSC labelled frozen cod, Alaska pollock, and saithe, testing whether and to what extent the premium exists, and whether the premium varies according to species. The results show that the presence of a premium in the German retail market depends on the speices of fish: cod has the greatest premium, Alaskan pollock is lower, and the premium for siathe is statistically insignificant. The authors conclude that this heterogeneity implies ecolabels can act as effective incentives for improved fishery management in some cases but not in all, and so it is in the interest of ecolabel providers to investigate market factors in each new context.
