概要

Tropical deforestation is a leading cause of biodiversity loss and source of greenhouse gas emissions. Much of this habitat loss results from agricultural expansion for a handful of commodities. In the last decade, many companies have made zero deforestation commitments or adopted sustainability standards to reduce their deforestation footprint. This study assesses the effectiveness of such market-based approaches in addressing deforestation in two hotspots - soy production in Brazil's Amazon and Cerrado biomes and palm oil cultivation in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.
